Triangulation column Zschirnstein
monument text: The Great Zschirnstein is the highest mountain in Saxon Switzerland with an 80 m high steep drop to the south and at the same time a lookout point with an impressive view. The survey point was set up in September 1865 on the south-western edge of the Großer Zschirnstein. The Royal Saxon State Fiscus owned the property. A photo from around 1910 shows the entire column. After that, it was only preserved in part for many years. In 2011 the upper part of the triangulation column was rebuilt and placed on the still existing base stones at a small ceremony on May 20, 2011. The approximately 1.70 m high column consists of Neundorf sandstone, the square substructure to the rock and a round, somewhat artistically worked capstone and the newer part of the column placed on it. Base bands are chiseled into the base and the transition to the smooth upper surface is rounded. There is no longer any cover. The inscription "Station / ZSCHIRNSTEIN / der / Kön: Sächs: / Triangulierung / 1865." has also been renewed, so there is no longer any writing. This was probably on the now missing column. A triangle in the north and TP in the south of the round stone identify it as a trigonometric point. In the period from 1862 to 1890, a land survey was carried out in the Kingdom of Saxony, in which two triangular networks were formed. On the one hand, there is the network for grade measurement in the Kingdom of Saxony (network I. class / order) with 36 points and the royal Saxon triangulation (network II. Class / order) with 122 points. This national survey was led by Christian August Nagel , according to which the triangulation columns are also referred to as "Nagelsche columns". This surveying system was one of the most modern layer networks in Germany. The surveying columns set for this purpose remained almost entirely in their original locations. They are an impressive testimony to the history of land surveying in Germany and in Saxony. The system of surveying pillars of both orders is in its entirety a cultural monument of supraregional importance (LfD / 2013). -
