Detailed memorial texts

  1. ^ Evangelical town church Hohnstein. Baroque choir tower church by George Bähr, 1725–28 including parts of the surrounding walls of the previous building, which was badly damaged in the fire of 1724. Restoration in 1825, 1881 (interior completely changed), 1963–67 (restoration of the original interior by Helmar Helas ) and since 1989. The exterior is simple, almost square nave with bevelled corners, recessed square choir with a semicircular end. Massive tower above the choir bay, dated 1730. Large arched windows in the nave and choir.
The nave is covered with a flat ceiling, with a simple coffer painting, the choir with groin vault . Circumferential galleries, two-storey in the nave, one-storey in the choir, with ornamental field painting. Large, glazed box in the west, formerly for the Wittig family, two smaller ones on the north and south walls of the choir. The choir is just closed by a wall reaching up to the gallery , the
sacristy in the apse behind . The furnishings correspond to the Protestant requirements for a church interior with a central pulpit altar, an organ above, the baptismal font in front of it. The concentric arrangement of the stalls (according to G. Bähr's plan) was not carried out: wooden, colored portico pulpit altar, dated 1736, by the sculptor Johann Gottlieb Kirchner (1706–1768) and the staff painter Christian Reinow. Richly carved, wooden baptism, dated 1738. The baroque organ, 1678, by Georg Öhme, prospectus by Johann Chr. Schmieder, 1731/32, comes from the church in Stöntzsch , Kr. Leipziger-Land (since 1967 in Hohnstein), sonically changed (Dehio Sachsen I, 1996).
  2. a b Hohnstein Castle - The picturesque building group on a high rock has its origin in the High Middle Ages . From 1543 Hohnstein Castle was used as a state prison or hunting lodge . After several fires at the beginning of the 17th century, the current structure dates from the 17th to the 20th century (except for the Lower Castle, whose core dates from around 1550). From 1924 to 1933 and again from 1951 youth hostel, 1933–34 Saxony's first concentration camp, prisoner of war camp during World War II. The older structure is partially offset with buildings from the 1950s, in 1952 the late Gothic St. Anne's Chapel at the Old Castle was demolished.
Entrance from the market square framed with walls, entrance (portal) through the ramp (former drawbridge). New / lower castle in the O: two-storey solid building with high pitched roof and Three-storey central projection, on the back a hexagonal tower (around 1550), laterally narrow side building with pent roof at right angles to it, behind the main building a curved viewing platform (probably 1920s), on the main building a memorial plaque to Konrad Hahnewald (1888–1962, youth hostel manager and first concentration camp inmate 1933). A ramp and a gatehouse (formerly with a drawbridge) lead to the Upper Castle (probably beginning of the 17th century, heavily modified with additions and fixtures from the 1950s), there a continuous walkway to the upper castle courtyard and high square keep with castle dungeon on the ground floor, above the former courtroom, the brewery (1630–1650) adjoins the upper castle, with a large castle cellar carved into the rock, the upper castle and the brewery form the front side of the castle facing the city on a narrow mountain spur. At an acute angle, SW adjoins the brewery with a youth hostel building (probably 1950s): three-story solid building with boarded-up 2nd floor and flat saddle roof, opposite a small "disposal building" (formerly a café? 1950s). Old (or rear) castle: in the outer southwest of the complex, destroyed to the ground in 1621 and 1632, current form 2nd
half of the 19th century, with high observation tower, rebuilt in 1951. Bear Garden: laid out in 1609 by Elector Christian II , In 1756 all bears were shot and their use as a bear garden was given up, deeply cut, narrow valley southeast of the castle, which was enclosed above and below by a high wall, in the upper section only small remains of the wall remain on the rocks, the lower wall is still preserved in large areas, u. a. a brick arch apparently used as a bear trap, which also acted as a water passage.
Burggarten (garden monument): area on the western castle hill below the building, partially enclosed with sandstone walls, several terraces adapted to the natural topographical conditions, access from the western castle courtyard via multiple staircases ("failure") and an access gate as well as another gate in the north, old trees of oak (Quercus robur), beech (Fagus sylvatica) and linden (Tilia spec.), view of the surrounding landscape, the current appearance is mainly characterized by its use as a youth hostel, in the northern part of the garden small purpose-built building (not a single monument) with a memorial plaque “Path of Sorrows 1933–34”.
Individual trees: large blood beech (Fagus sylvatica f. Purpurea) southeast of the lower castle, linden (Tilia spec.) In the western courtyard.
Pleasure garden : To the north there was apparently a former pleasure garden below the castle hill. On the miles sheets of 1781 (Berlin and Freiberg copies) this area is recorded as "Himelreich" or is recognizable as an enclosed area (Dresden copy). On the topographic maps from 1897 onwards, a garden with a regular system of paths can be seen there. A small cemetery is noted in the south of the enclosed area. Today there is no longer a garden, but the area can still be easily read from the area due to the lack of forest trees. In the area of the former cemetery there are still some typical cemetery trees such as arborvitae (Thuja spec.).

Strongly changed by renovations and new buildings, the current structure of the building from the 16th century to the 19th century. Older buildings were destroyed by fire or (like the late Gothic St. Anna Chapel in 1952) torn down.
Remains of a gate towards the market square and stairs to the lower castle courtyard, on this the lower castle (museum), a stately two-story building with a high gable roof and three-story
central projection , hexagonal tower at the back, around 1550, restoration 1968–76. It originally served as a residential and administrative building for the bailiff and as an electoral hunting lodge. Changed inside. - Another gatehouse, formerly with a drawbridge, probably from the 17th century, with several adjoining buildings (including the Upper Castle, heavily modified) and a continuous battlement to the upper castle courtyard. The keep is a high square tower, the castle dungeon on the ground floor, above the former courtroom. The brewery on the west side, dated 1630–50, with the "large castle cellar" carved into the rock from the time it was built. The rear or old castle (castle café and observation tower) to the south, it belongs to the oldest castle complex, was destroyed to the ground in fires in 1604, 1621 and 1632, the current form in the 2nd half of the 19th century.
