The Stadtkirche Hohnstein is the Evangelical Lutheran town church in Hohnstein in Saxon Switzerland . The baroque building is one of the most important in Saxony.

history

A parish church in Hohnstein was first mentioned in 1381. In the course of the Reformation introduced in the Duchy of Saxony-Wittenberg in 1539 , the church became Evangelical-Lutheran. On September 22nd, 1724 the building was destroyed by a city fire. Reconstruction was planned in the same year. On May 1, 1725, reconstruction began on the foundations of the previous building according to plans by the Dresden council carpenter George Bähr . The church was consecrated on October 4, 1728. The church tower was completed in 1730 and the altar was consecrated in 1736. In 1881 there was a major renovation in the style of historicism . From 1962 to 1967, the baroque version was exposed and reconstructed as part of a further renovation. In 2010 the building was renovated.

Building description

Bähr's handwriting of a directed central space can also be found in the Hohnstein Church. The central building is considered a forerunner of the Dresden Frauenkirche . The base of the building is square. The two-storey, ornamentally painted gallery extends over three sides. The ship has a flat roof and is decorated with a simple coffer painting. Pulpit, altar and organ stand one above the other in the choir with groin vault. The sculptor Johann Gottlieb Kirchner created the wooden portico altar in 1726 , which was colored by the court painter Carl Christian Reinow.

Organ of the city church

The organ with five registers made by Georg Oehme for the village church of Stöntzsch in 1678 was expanded to ten registers during a renovation by Johann Christoph Schmieder and checked by Johann Sebastian Bach on November 12, 1731 and February 4, 1732 . In 1860 it was rebuilt by Wilhelm Berger. In 1935 the instrument was restored by Hermann Eule and the disposition expanded. In 1965 the village and church were devastated because of an open- cast brown coal mine and the organ was moved to the Hohnstein church and changed again. The previous organ from 1843 was installed in the town church in Radeberg . Today's disposition comprises 15 registers, four of which are from Oehme / Schmieder:
