Life

Christian Gottfried Herbrig comes from a linen weaver family in Taubenheim. It is not known where he learned how to build an organ, there are only guesses. He was first mentioned as an organ builder in 1808 when Gottfried Silbermann was repairing the Crostau organ . From 1801 to 1807 he was the church father in the village.

The family moved to (Hinter-) Ottendorf near Sebnitz around 1816 . This is where the first major renovations were made to the organs in Ulbersdorf and Lichtenhain, as well as new buildings for Schmiedefeld and Sohland on the Spree . Around 1828 the family moved to Altstadt near Stolpen. Further new buildings were built for Großdrebnitz , Dorf Wehlen (here in St. Michaelis, father and son also built the altar) and Burkau .

The next residence and workshop was in Langenwolmsdorf near Stolpen, from around 1837. This was probably the most successful time of the father and son Herbrig workshop with the new organs for Eschdorf near Pirna , Pohla near Bischofswerda, Hohnstein , Putzkau , Großharthau (?), Schönfeld near Dresden, Markersbach near Gottleuba and Schmölln near Bischofswerda. Since the 1840s, his son WL Herbrig was apparently responsible for the new buildings in Langenwolmsdorf, Papstdorf , Stürza and Helmsdorf . The three last organ works by the son were written for Seeligstadt (1855), Altstadt (1856), now part of Stolpen, and Kötzschenbroda (1861).

Herbrig and his son Wilhelm Leberecht coined a characteristic "organ landscape". In addition to new constructions, the Herbrigs have carried out tuning work, repairs and alterations to many organs in Lusatia and Saxon Switzerland .

The catalog raisonné only includes the Herbrigs' completely independent new organs. Major modifications to third-party instruments that gave them a Herbrig character were not counted. The directory may remain incomplete.
