Putzkau is a forest hoof village that stretches for six kilometers through the Wesenitztal between Neukirch / Lausitz and Bischofswerda and merges seamlessly into both neighboring towns. history

Manor Ober-Putzkau around 1850

Putzkaus was first named in 1344 in a court case. The oldest building in the village is the church, which can be traced back to 1386. The minister in charge of Saxony-Poland under August the Strong, Field Marshal Jacob Heinrich von Flemming , was buried here in 1728 . He had bought the estate in 1724; it had previously belonged to the chief chamberlain, Christian August von Haxthausen , among others .

The historical manor had been in the possession of the Electoral Saxon diplomat Count Andreas von Riaucour (1722–1794), a very respected politician and important art collector, who stayed mainly at the Electoral Palatinate court in Mannheim since 1751 . The property remained in the possession of his family, later called Schall-Riaucour , until 1945. On the epitaph of Andreas von Riaucour's son Adam Heinrich Peter (1761–1762) in the Mannheim St. Sebastian Church , Putzkau is the father's property also called.

As part of the construction of the South Lusatian Railway , the Putzkau Viaduct was completed in 1878 after only two years of construction . The viaduct is a 400 meter long, 18 meter high arched bridge over the Wesenitztal.

The municipality of Putzkau was created in 1934 through the merger of Ober- and Niederputzkau and existed until 1994 when it was merged with Schmölln and Tröbigau in the municipality of Schmölln-Putzkau.
