The Wendelberg tunnel is a 483 meter long road tunnel on the B 21 or E 641 , which is located southwest of Schneizlreuth just before the border with Austria on German territory.

geography

South portal seen from the national border.

The tunnel is located in southeast Bavaria near the border with Salzburg on the eastern edge of the Chiemgau Alps 370 m southeast of the Steinpass and leads through the southwest flank of the Wendelberg . It is located (as the crow flies ) 5.1 kilometers east of the Sonntagshorn and 1.8 kilometers north of the Achhorn at the southern end of a north-western side valley of the Saalach between the villages of Schneizlreuth in the Berchtesgadener Land district in the northeast and Unken in the Zell am See district in the southwest. To the northwest of the tunnel lies the Schneizlreuther district of Melleck.

The Wendelberg tunnel is part of the small, busy German corner . In front of the north portal of the tunnel, the old route over the Steinpass branches off from the main road to Melleck, only to meet the new route again not far from the south portal, but already beyond the state border. In Austria, the B 178 , which leads further south, joins it.

history

The Wendelberg Tunnel was built from 1985 to 1987 with two lanes and one tube. In 2005 and 2006, the tunnel was modernized to meet the latest safety standards. In 2015, the municipality of Schneizlreuth issued a positive opinion on the intended construction of a rescue tunnel by the state building authority. The tunnel was opened for this in February 2017 . The 291 m long rescue tunnel will be built on the west side of the existing tube from the north portal using mining techniques. This is connected to the road tunnel with an already existing 15 m long cross passage. Completion is scheduled for September 2018.
