Location of Barchel in Lower Saxony

Barchel is a village in the municipality of Oerel in the north of the Rotenburg (Wümme) district , Lower Saxony . Barchel has about 750 inhabitants.

geography

Geographical location

Barchel is located on the "coastal road" ( B 71 / B 74 ) in the Elbe-Weser triangle near Bremervörde between Hamburg and Bremen on a foothill of the large north German Geestrücken, which extends from Meppen on the Dutch border to the North Sea coast between the Elbe (Stade) and Weser (Bremerhaven).

history

Urn graves were discovered in Barchel , which indicate a very early settlement of the area. Barchel appears for the first time in the 14th century in a certificate of distribution for the Poggemühlen estate under the name Berchelte. The name Berchelte probably goes back to the old Germanic proper name Berchthold. From this it can be concluded that the first settler was a person named Berchthold. The syllable “te” indicates fence, so Berchelte means “fence of Berchthold”.

By 1663 Berchelte had already become Barchel. Due to the population growth, the need for land and pastureland also increased. The deforestation of the original beech and oak forests was the result.

On March 1, 1974, Barchel was incorporated into the municipality of Oerel.

economy

Agriculture is still the main economic factor. Concentration has reduced the number of farms to a few, but these have become all the greater. The concentration also means a concentration on a few agricultural products. Dairy farming and meat production (beef cattle) are the cornerstones. Grains and other crops tend to be the exception. As part of the north German "grassland", this is not surprising.

While the cows used to spend the summer on the meadows and pastures of the municipality, today they are kept in stalls. Larger and larger playpens are emerging. The pastures serve as a source of fodder and are processed very efficiently with ever larger machines.

Organic farmers are not yet active in Barchel.

In addition to agriculture, logistics forwarding , the timber industry and tree nurseries as well as smaller craft businesses and service providers are represented on site.

Today's economic situation

The current economic situation in Barchel is comparable to many other rural places in the near and far. In the past few years the last grocery store, the savings bank, several restaurants and a long time ago the local brickworks closed , which until then had supplied bricks for all houses and streets for the entire town and beyond. The kindergarten and school were also closed or relocated to Oerel. This means that important components of an intact infrastructure are missing. Efforts are currently underway to reverse this trend. There are activities within the framework of public programs ("Village renewal" in Oerel, "Our village has a future" in Barchel) and on the basis of private initiatives to counteract the dehydration. In Oerel and Barchel, a comprehensive fiber optic network ( our local network, now German fiber optic) was implemented for the provision of the population and local companies with fast internet access, telephone and television. Telekom had always left the region unrated as economically uninteresting and therefore undersupplied.

The local economy is currently made up of a car workshop , a plumbing and heating construction company , a shipping company and a few small businesses.

leisure

A public outdoor pool is operated by the Geestequelle municipality . There are also numerous leisure activities (choir, volunteer fire brigade , shooting club, film club, Nordic walking, etc.).

Equestrian sport deserves a special mention. Barchel has a huge number of horse lovers and breeders. Various horse breeds are represented. The horse-related activities are correspondingly diverse. Mounted Games is very popular and also very successful. Show jumping, dressage, western riding, gaited horse riding and driving can be found. The Barchel breeding successes are also impressive. In addition to parking spaces, the local riding club offers its members two riding arenas.
