Jembke is a municipality in the district of Gifhorn, in Lower Saxony ( Germany ).
geography
Geographical location
Jembke is located between the Südheide and Drömling nature parks on the Kleine Aller . The community belongs to the Boldecker Land joint community , which has its administrative seat in Weyhausen.
history
Jembke was once the largest village in the Boldecker Land . The original village shape was that of a Wendish round . The beginnings of settlements go back to the early Christianization of this area, which belonged to the Derlingau . In 844 the community was first mentioned as Lianbeke in the Corvey Monastery . In 1339 it was called Jembeke . In 1339 the von Marenholtz family took over the village from the von Campe family. In the church there is a coat of arms stone dated 1366 of the then patron saint of the church, Knight Harneid von Marenholtz. In 1495 the village became part of the von Bartensleben family . The Brunswick Duke Heinrich gave it to them as a fief , like the other villages in the Boldecker Land . In 1574 a fire destroyed the village. According to a settlement register from around 1850, there were 31 farms at that time.
Place name
The place name, 844 Lianbeke and 1339 Jembeke , varied several times in the historical records from Jemeke around 1400, Geimike around 1715, Jeimbcke around 1775, Jeimcke around 1800, Jeimke around 1825 to the current name. The basic word of the name Jembke can be derived from the Middle Low German word Beke (Bach).
church
The St. George Church is built from field stones and has been enlarged several times in its history. Initially it was probably a small mission chapel, which, due to its documentary mention, should have existed as early as 844. This was confirmed by excavations during a church renovation in the years 1965-67. Wall structures measuring 5 × 6 m and a baptismal font were found in the church floor. The chapel was expanded in the 12th century. In the 14th century a Gothic extension was added and in 1716 another significant extension was added. When the village burned down in 1574, the church burned down and its three bells melted. Today's bells are from 1927 and 1952. The church building is located in the center of the village and is surrounded by old oaks. The cemetery used to be around the church. Today there is a 600 year old linden tree , the Ulenboom, on the site .

coat of arms
Blazon : "In silver a green linden leaf pointing downwards, covered with a silver ring that is open at the top."
The linden leaf indicates the seven linden trees in the local area, designated as natural monuments , of which the most famous Uhlenboom was named. This occurs in local sagas and stories. The green color is also a sign of agriculture. The ring that is open at the top, a symbol for Rundling villages on maps, represents the original location.
The coat of arms was designed by the heraldist Wilhelm Krieg from Braunschweig. The coat of arms was awarded on August 27, 1983 by the then Oberkreisdirektor Lemke.
