history

Thiede was first mentioned in a document around 780 as Tihide . Later the name changed several times, 1007 Thidhi , 1166 Thide , 1191 Thidhe up to the current name Thiede.

Countess Frederunda von Oelsburg and her mother Hathewig built Steterburg Abbey around 1000 on the site of the Stederburg, which has existed since the early 10th century .

In the Thirty Years War in 1641 the battle for the Wolfenbüttel Fortress was fought near Thiede. The dukes of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel and the French, Hesse and Sweden took the Lindenberg near Thiede , but the battle with the Bavarian imperial troops ended in a draw. The so-called Swedish graves in long wood also date from this time.

In 1691 the dukes Rudolf August and Anton Ulrich raised the free world monastery to a free world monastery of noble virgins. The famous finds of prehistoric mammoth bones at Thieder Lindenberg also date from the end of the 17th century . When the prehistoric skeleton was uncovered in June 1692, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz used a tooth to prove that it was not the remains of a “giant” but the skeleton of a mammoth that had been found. In 1758 the late Baroque collegiate church was inaugurated, which is now a place of interest.

In 1816, large bone fragments from prehistoric animals were found again in the plaster of paris in Thiede. As a result, extensive excavations were carried out and, in addition to the remains of woolly rhinoceros and giant deer, those of at least five mammoths were recovered. Parts of it are exhibited today in the Natural History Museum in Braunschweig .

The first mine in Thiede was built in 1885 when the Thiederhall union sank a potash shaft. Furthermore, the Braunschweig – Derneburg railway line was built with a train station in Thiede. The potash mine was shut down in 1924, the railway stop was relocated with the line in the early 1940s and is still served today.

In 1938 the Steterburg Jungfrauenstift was dissolved. In 1942 Thiede was incorporated into the new town of Watenstedt-Salzgitter . Before that it belonged to the Wolfenbüttel district . In 1966, Salzgitter's first indoor swimming pool was opened in Thiede.

Population development

Today, Salzgitter-Thiede has a small-town infrastructure and around 11,000 inhabitants.

The Catholic St. Bernward Church was built in 1953 and a tower was added in 1959. In 1954/55 the neighboring Redemptorist monastery was built and in 1957 a retreat house was inaugurated there. In 1982/83 a new Redemptorist monastery was built behind the church. In 2001 the retreat house was closed and the first monastery building was later sold. As early as 1926, the Hildesheim diocese had acquired the former inspector's house of the Thiederhall potash works , in which the Catholic St. George Chapel was set up in 1926/27 (called Joseph Müller House from 1946 ) . In 2004 the chapel was profaned and converted into an apartment.

coat of arms

The tinned diamond is a symbol for the fortification and refers to the Pascheburg built in the 13th century, which was used to secure the path . The linden leaf in it stands for a fenced-in Thingplatz , i.e. an old court building that was often planted with linden trees in the past ( court linden tree ). The Lindenblatt also refers to the Thieder Lindenberg on the eastern edge of the place - today a residential and recreational area. The green basic color stands as a symbol for agriculture, which has shaped the place for a long time.

The coat of arms was unanimously adopted on July 10, 1989 by Arbeitskreis Thiede eV and the local council.
