The Werratalsee is a 104-hectare quarry pond in the Werra-Meißner district in northern Hesse ( Germany ). It is located in the areas of the city of Eschwege and the municipality of Meinhard .
Geographical location
The Werratalsee is located north-north-west of the Schlierbachswald between Eschwege in the west- south- west, Grebendorf in the north-west, the Großer Leuchtberg (location of the Bismarck tower near Eschwege ) in the south and Schwebda in the east. It is located in the river valley of the Werra and is a 5-minute walk from the old town of Eschweges. The federal road 249 leads past the north bank in the section from Eschwege to Schwebda , at which an altitude mark at 159.7 m above sea level. NN lies.

The Werratalsee is a popular destination for those looking for relaxation and suitable for sailing , windsurfing , rowing and canoeing . There are also two sandy beaches guarded by the DLRG for swimming.
There is a camping park on the south bank of the lake, which has sanitary facilities, a bistro / restaurant, a mini market, a playground, table tennis tables, a mini golf course and a beach volleyball court. Since 2008, a small excursion boat, the “Werranixe”, has been operating on the lake every hour in the afternoon. The landing stages are on the south bank (Eschwege) and on the east bank (Schwebda).
The Hessian rowing championships and in 2008 the German sprint championships and the German large boat championships are held annually on the lake . The regatta course can range from 350 m to 2,000 m. The lake is also the state performance center of the Hessian Rowing Association.
There is a 7 km long circular path around the lake, which is used by walkers and cyclists.
The bicycle bus (line 170) operated by the Wartburgmobil transport company offers good connections to Eschwege , Treffurt , Creuzburg and Eisenach .
