Bismarck Tower Eschwege

The Bismarck Tower Eschwege is an approximately 26 m high Bismarck monument on the summit of the Großer Leuchtberg ( 318.7  m above sea  level ) in the north Hessian Werra-Meißner district, east of Eschwege and immediately south of the Werra .

History and description

The observation tower , which is surrounded by ramparts dating back to the 10th century, was built from sandstone on the site of a medieval guard tower according to a design by the district architect Hans Behrendt (Eschwege) . The foundation stone was laid on June 23, 1902 and its opening on September 2, 1903.

Below the second viewing platform there is an inscription carved in stone: "BISMARCK TO HONOR / PAST TO / MEMORY LIVING TO JOY / FUTURE TO / ADMINISTRATION". Below each is a coat of arms showing a cloverleaf decorated with three oak leaves (coat of arms of the Bismarcks family )

Bronze plate by Ernst Wenck

Above the entrance is a bronze plate with a portrait relief of Otto von Bismarck looking to the right , on the left a coat of arms with the crowned imperial eagle and on the right of the relief again the coat of arms of the von Bismarck family. The inscription surrounding this image reproduces one of the most famous Bismarck quotes: “WE GERMANS Fear GOD ELSE, NOTHING IN THE WORLD Don A. v. Keudell ”. The bronze plate was created by the sculptor Ernst Wenck from Berlin.

The construction cost 36,561.51 marks . This sum was mainly raised through donations. The initiative for the construction of this tower came from the chairman of the Werra Valley Association at the time, Dr. Wilhelm Brill from.

The sandstone Bismarck tower in Eschweg has a base with a square floor plan of 8 m × 8 m. It is about 26 m high. A total of 109 steps lead up.

Possibility of viewing

The tower has three viewing platforms on which you can enjoy the view of the Eschweg basin with Eschwege and its surroundings in every direction : in the north to the Eichsfeld , in the east to the Heldrastein , in the southeast to the nearby Schlierbachswald in the south to the Boyneburg and in the west to the Hoher Meissner .
