Horst Sylla

Horst Sylla (born February 11, 1933 in Hindenburg OS ) is a former lieutenant general of the National People's Army . He was head of the GDR military district V (1985–1990).

Life

Origin and education

Horst Sylla was born on February 11, 1933 in the town of Hindenburg OS (Upper Silesia; today: Zabrze) as the son of a miner and grew up in a simple family. After eight classes, he finished school and from 1947 to 1950 learned to be an electrical machine builder . At the beginning of his apprenticeship in 1947 he became a member of the youth association Free German Youth.

From 1950 to 1951 he retrained as a boring machine lathe operator and worked from 1951 to 1953 in what would later become VEB Starkstromanlagenbau "Otto Buchwitz" in Dresden.

Military career

With his voluntary entry, Horst Sylla became a member of the CIP of the GDR on January 23, 1953 . After completing basic military training, he was trained as a trainee  / officer student at the tank schools in Güstrow-Priemerwald and Großenhain from 1953 to 1954 . In 1954 he became a member of the SED .

After being appointed officer (1954), Sylla was employed in his first officer service as a platoon leader of an armored train in the heavy Panzer SFL regiment (sPzSFL-Rgt) of the Mechanized Division (MechD) in the KVP office in Dresden.

At the beginning of 1956 he was transferred to the National People's Army (NVA) of the GDR, at Spremberg (dsb - Grodk, Niederlausitz) in the 14th Panzer Regiment of the 7th Panzer Division (NVA) , where he served as the company commander of the regiment's reconnaissance company. From 1957 to 1960 Sylla was employed as a specialist teacher / trainer for tank officers at the tank school in Grossenhain and completed her secondary school leaving certificate while working.

From 1960 to 1964 Horst Sylla completed a direct study for troop commanders of the operational-tactical management level at the military academy "Friedrich Engels" in Dresden , which he graduated in 1964 at the Faculty of Land Forces with a diploma in military science (Dipl. Rer. Mil.).

Horst Sylla then continued his troop service in the 4th Motorized Rifle Division (4th MSD, staff in Erfurt) in various positions: 1st Deputy Commander (1964–1968) and Commander (1968–1971) in the 4th Panzer Regiment at the site Gotha.

After a year of preparation (1971) in Moscow , Horst Sylla graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR "K. J. Voroshilov “ an operational-strategic command training (1972–1974), which he completed with a further diploma as a military scientist.

After completing his general staff training, he was employed as deputy commander for training (1974–1977) of the 4th Mot Rifle Division in Erfurt. With the transfer to the military district V of the GDR, to Eggesin , Sylla took over as commander of the 9th Panzer Division (9th PD) . On October 7, 1979, Sylla was appointed general.

From 1983 to 1985 Sylla was employed as a commander at the officers' college of the land forces "Ernst Thälmann" in Löbau .

In the period 1985/86 he was employed at the Neubrandenburg location as deputy to the chief and chief of staff of military district V and one year later he became chief MB V (Neubrandenburg). In this function he was in the case of defense the commander of the 5th Army of the NVA in the coalition group of the armed forces of the Warsaw Treaty Organization. On March 1, 1988, Horst Sylla was promoted to lieutenant general.

Before the NVA was decommissioned in the course of establishing the unity of Germany, Horst Sylla was released from the GDR's National People's Army on September 30, 1990 at the age of 57.

Security policy work

In 2004, Sylla became a member of the Dresden Study Group Security Policy (DSS) e. V. and was a member of the board from 2005 until it was dissolved in 2015. He has published articles in several issues of the DSS working papers and moderated the annual public panel on the World Day of Peace in September (2008–2013) in Dresden.
