National Research Council (United States)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The National Research Council (NRC, German National Research ) of the United States is a private non-profit organization and one of the four National Academies of the United States. He organizes most of the research that is conducted on behalf of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering .

The NRC, based in Washington, DC , was founded in 1916 in response to World War I to promote military- oriented research. After the war he was gradually decoupled from the military. Today it is jointly administered by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and the National Academy of Medicine (NAM). Its work is led by a governing board and overseen by an executive committee. Both bodies are chaired by the NAS president; his deputy is always the president of the NAE. The members of these committees also belong to the NAS, the NAE or the NAM.

The NRC sees its tasks as advising policy-makers, increasing the general level of education and promoting research in the fields of natural sciences, engineering, technology and health care, as well as disseminating their results.
