biography
After studying at the Jan van Eyck Art Academy in Maastricht , he settled in Utrecht .
As a sculptor, Ruud Kuijer became famous in 1986 for his abstract sculptures , in which he often used recognizable forms. Initially, these sculptures consisted of rough industrial materials such as steel , wood and concrete . In recent years he has mainly been working with concrete.
Since 2002 Ruud Kuijer has been working on a group of seven large sculptures on a headland on the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal in Utrecht. For this project under the name Sculpture at Land's End on the industrial estate Lage Weide, which he initiated himself, he received the Fentener van Vlissingen Culture Prize in 2004 and the Dutch Concrete Prize in 2005.
Ruud Kuijer calls his sculptures Waterworks (Wasserwerke / Wasserkunstwerke) because of the different levels on which the sculptures relate to the water. He has now completed five large sculptures, and Waterwerk V, entitled Circuit, was installed in June 2009. In May 2008 the sculpture Springtij (spring tide) was installed in front of the main building of Boskalis in Papendrecht.
