Hugo Jung (art collector)

Hugo Jung (born March 6, 1928 ; † January 4, 2017 in Aachen ) was a German doctor ( gynecologist ) and art collector.

Hugo Jung as a gynecologist

Hugo Jung studied medicine in Mainz and Freiburg . In Freiburg he received his doctorate in 1954 and his habilitation in 1963. In 1967 he became the founding director of the gynecology and obstetrics department at the Aachen University Hospital . For a decade he was the construction officer of the medical faculty and during this time he was also involved in the planning and implementation of the new building for the university clinic. In 1993 he retired, but continued to practice gynecology for a few years.

Hugo Jung as an art collector

Together with his wife Ingrid Jung (1927–2012) he devoted himself to collecting modern art at an early age and in 1971 was one of the founders of the Association of Friends of the Ludwig Forum for International Art e. V. (then still the Neue Galerie - Ludwig Collection), of which he was chairman from 1974 to 1977.

Due to their collecting and curator activities, the Jung couple were counted among the 200 most important collectors worldwide by Art news magazine from 2009 to 2011 . The Jung collection is now in the Galerie der Gegenwart at the Hamburger Kunsthalle .

Hugo Jung found his final resting place in the hot mountain cemetery in Burtscheid / Aachen .
