Building history

Piece of old cemetery wall

The hot mountain cemetery in Burtscheid has existed since 1862. On October 23, 1851, the site on the hot mountain was acquired by the municipality to establish a new city cemetery and in 1852 the construction of the surrounding wall was decided, which was carried out by the construction company B. Klausener & Rhoen . The hot mountain cemetery was the first churchyard for both denominations, but initially still neatly separated: Protestants on the left, Catholics on the right . In the years 1878 and 1889 there was an expansion to the present size of 1.96 hectares. The oldest graves are in the upper part and in 1937 the last row graves were allocated.

The funeral and mourning hall is located on the left behind the entrance portal. The gate itself was initially the official residence of the cemetery inspector. The hot mountain cemetery contains, among other things, the graves of important Burtscheid families such as Erckens, Kirdorf, Klausener and Pastor , whose members played a key role in determining and shaping the flourishing Burtscheid cloth and needle industry, the building trade and politics.

The entry in the list of monuments reads:

"Heissbergstrasse, corner of Robert-Schumann-Str."
"Opened in 1862, entrance building probably built a little later;"
"Entrance hall made of brick, tombstones from the late 19th and early 20th centuries."

Works of art and tombs from the classicist period to the present that are characteristic of the time are testament to the Burtscheider sepulchral culture . Two neo-Gothic war memorials were erected on the main path, one cenotaph , the unveiling of which took place on June 29, 1868, commemorates those who died in the war in 1866 and the other commemorates the victims of 1870/71 who died on the battlefields of Gravelotte , Sedan , St Quentin , Metz , Paris and in the Battle of Wörth , Battle of Mars-la-Tour , Battle of Orléans and Battle of Villiers .

Many important sculptors in Aachen and Burtscheid were involved in the design of the graves, including Lambert Piedboeuf , Wilhelm Pohl , Carl Esser , Alfred Pieper, Erich von den Driesch , Karl Krauss , Heinrichs and Wings and Joseph Mataré. For example, Erich von den Driesch created a seated female figure in marble for the three-part grave complex of the Neuss family and, for another complex, a mourning woman from 1909 who is holding a flower arrangement in her right hand on her right knee. He also designed the grave of the Laaf family with a group of figures made of electroplating , made in the art institute of the Württembergische Metallwarenfabrik (WMF) in Geislingen an der Steige . The Aachen sculptor Josef Mataré (March 19, 1880 - September 25, 1966), brother of Ewald Mataré and father of Herbert Mataré , can be seen on another grave with the depiction of “Faistos” as a bronze relief from 1913.
