Karl Krauss

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Krauss , also Carl Krauss (born May 14, 1859 in Munich , † November 30, 1906 in Aachen ) was a German sculptor of historicism and university lecturer.

Live and act

After finishing school, Karl Krauss studied with Anton Hess , also a sculptor of historicism, at the Royal School of Applied Arts in Munich , in whose private studio he then continued to work as an assistant. In 1888, the Technical University of Aachen appointed him a teaching position for modeling and embossing . Here, in 1896, Krauss was finally appointed professor specializing in portrait sculptures and reliefs .

Up until his untimely death in 1906, in addition to his teaching activities, Krauss produced several objects for public space that are still in good condition today, most of which have now been placed under monument protection. His most extensive and most important works include the two standing figures and eight coats of arms reliefs on Aachen City Hall , which were recreated as part of necessary restoration measures after a fire in 1883. The work in the field of portrait sculpture held a special place , such as the busts of Kaiser Wilhelm II , Otto von Bismarck , Helmuth von Moltke or the relief portrait of Pope Leo XII. reveal.

Some of Karl Krauss's works were in the possession of the Suermondt Ludwig Museum in Aachen, which had organized an estate exhibition in 1907. In December 1906 parts of his estate and that of the late painter Professor Albert Baur ( Düsseldorf ) were shown in an exhibition with the collections of Hans Völker ( Wiesbaden ) and Henry Luyten (Brasschaet near Antwerp ). As early as 1902, the portraits of the Aachen mayors Johann von Pont († 1386) and Gerhard Chorus as well as the plaster models of the town hall figures for the south side were exhibited in the hallway on the ground floor . The plaster bust of Wilhelm II could be seen in the front stairwell on the first floor, that of the former museum director Fritz Berndt in the museum extension. In the vestibule, room XXII on the second floor, there was a plaster bust of Alfred Rethel , also made by Krauss , who had died in the year he was born. Further works by Krauss were in the former bedroom of the Villa Cassalette and the sideboard, rooms XXXII and XXXIII. In 1906 he exhibited his works in the Suermondt Museum and the museum acquired his design for a St. Michael bronze group.

Gravestone design by Prof. Krauss, drawing by C. Hermes

Around 1901 he made a design for the tomb competition of the Stift & Chisel association. Eugène Klinckenberg had re-founded the association. The results of the tender should be easy to execute. The drawing of his design comes from C. Hermes. Other participants were C. Hermes, J. Breuer, Ms. Wildt, O. Hellgre and W. Pipping. Krauss published 25 of her designs.

Karl Krauss's best-known students include Walter Ophey , Ewald Mataré , Wilhelm Braun and Alfred Pieper , from whom the first doll heads of the Öcher Schängchen , autobahn sculptures , the fountain in the Hangeweiher swimming pool and the Burtscheider fountain monument of the water-scooping boy come.

At the Aachen Millennium Exhibition of 1925, the plaque made by Krauss for the professor of mountain science Wilhelm Schulz (No. 56) and by Henr. Pile. Goovaerts the portrait of Krauss in oil on canvas (No. 103). Goovaert's depiction shows the sculptor at work, making a sculpture.

The painter Adolf Krebs also portrayed Karl Krauss. The art historian Max Schmid-Burgk characterized Krauss in 1906 as a humorous person who also designed occasional decorations to earn a living in Aachen and the surrounding area.

After Krauss succumbed to his lifelong throat problem in the Louisenhospital in Aachen on November 30, 1906, he was buried on December 3, 1906.

style

Krauss ensured harmony with the architecture in his figure decorations. His portraits captured the character typical of the time. The busts from the Bismarck Tower in 1906 illustrate its strikingly stylized form of representation. His expressive facial features, especially the hair and beard shapes, testify to an expressionistic touch in contrast to his idealized naturalistic representation of the Lenné bust. The use of different stylistic devices took place achronologically.

Krauss used antique and medieval drapery shapes in an eclectic way . His allegorical sculptures include the hard work in the form of a woman with a distaff , the hard work personified as a blacksmith, law and custom as a judge and chaste housewife in half-length representations. His grave design includes angels and putti , who decorate the grave with flowers or garlands, and simple grave slabs. Krauss also had work in the WMF electroplating art institute in Geislingen an der Steige, as did Erich von den Driesch . His three Christ figures are listed in the 1919 grave jewelry catalog. The works have three nails, a crown of thorns and varying loincloths.

The blessing figure of Christ is Krauss' interpretation of a role model by Thorvaldsen . It stood above the portal in a canopy niche in the gable. The figures of John the Baptist and the Apostle Paul were located in the niches of the two front buttresses. A relief on the Sermon on the Mount adorned the portal arch as a statement that the word of God was preached in this church. The gable figures were donated by Kirchmeister Krabb, the relief by Privy Councilor von Wagner. The evangelist sculptures on the long side on the buttresses: Matthew , Mark and Luke as synoptics as well as John with the eagle were a foundation by Ed. Forest houses.
