Andreas Beitin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Andreas F. Beitin (* 1968 in Uetersen ) is a German art historian , curator and director of the Wolfsburg Art Museum .

Life

Andreas Beitin was born in Uetersen as the son of Peter and Monika Beitin. He completed an apprenticeship as a landscape gardener. He then made up his Abitur at the evening grammar school in Münster, and then studied art history , applied cultural studies as well as modern and contemporary history in Münster . He wrote his dissertation on the motif of the scream in German painting and graphics of the 20th century.

After working as a project manager for an international art consulting company, Beitin began working at the Center for Art and Media Technology in 2004 , initially in various scientific and curatorial positions and from 2010 as head of the ZKM Museum for New Art . Within eleven years at the ZKM he worked in a curatorial / responsible position at 79 exhibitions.

From February 2016, Beitin was director of the Ludwig Forum for International Art in Aachen. What attracted him to the new task was the "challenge" and work with the renowned collection of the house. Beitin made it his business to “further develop the Ludwig Forum as a living house”. In December 2018 he announced that he would leave the Ludwig Forum 2019 and head the Wolfsburg Art Museum on April 1, 2019 .

Bodies

Andreas Beitin participates in numerous art juries and scientific committees. These include u. a. Fraunhofer Society , Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), RWE Foundation for Energy and Society , Volkswagen Foundation . Since 2013 he has been chairman of the advisory board for fine arts at the Goethe-Institut .

Teaching

From 2014 Beitin taught as a lecturer in art history at the State Academy for Fine Arts in Karlsruhe .

Curation

Beitin no longer sees cultural institutions as just a “ forum for the presentation of beautiful and contemplative things” because, in his opinion, “in a complex world with equally complex social, ecological and economic challenges” they are much more a “contemporary discourse platform for artistic debate with social developments and changes in the age of globalization ”. Modern and contemporary art can meet this challenge with its questions, offers of knowledge and awareness . To make this possible, Beitin sees the goal of his curatorial practice.

Awards

2017 - Justus Bier Prize for curators

Andreas Beitin, Brigitte Franzen and Holger Otten received the Justus Beer Prize for Curators for the Mies van de Rohe exhibition in 2017 . Both the project and the accompanying publication "Mies van der Rohe: Montage Collage, Ludwig Forum Aachen , Museum Georg Schäfer Schweinfurt, 2017" were awarded. The jury justified this as follows: “The Justus Beer Prize is dedicated to exhibition projects and publications that impress with their original topic and well-founded professional analysis. In the opinion of the jury, the project for the montages and collages by Mies van der Rohe was an exemplary success. Although Mies van der Rohe is a world-famous architect, whose work has given rise to countless investigations to this day, a systematic monographic overall presentation of his collages and photomontages has so far been missing. This is all the more remarkable as this part of the work offers a comprehensive insight into the thinking of Mies van der Rohe. The editors succeed in exemplifying precisely that panoramic aspect of this group of works. "

2018 - Exhibition of the year

"Flashes of the Future. The art of the 68s or the power of the powerless. ”Was created by AICA Deutschland e. V. elected exhibition of the year 2018. “The exhibition, developed by Andreas Beitin (Aachen) and Eckhart Gillen (Berlin), unfolded a panorama of art around 1968 in all its styles that was never so comprehensive in over 200 works. While the memory of 1968 is mostly narrowed in political terms to the student revolt, the curators showed that the social upheaval that began in 1968 had heralded itself in art long before. An extensive catalog analyzes and explains the art, politics and society of that time in around 60 articles. Such a complete and differentiated inventory of the cultural situation at that time can probably only succeed after a distance of half a century. "

2018 - Museum of the Year

In 2018, the Ludwig Forum for International Art was voted Museum of the Year 2018 by the German section of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA) . The jury's reasoning: "Under the current direction of Andreas Beitin, the Ludwig Forum was particularly noticeable for its well-presented and researched thematic special exhibitions that show artistic trends of the present and the recent past in a new light and also illustrate cultural and political contexts."
