Gillian Phyllida Barlow CBE RA (born April 4, 1944 in Newcastle upon Tyne ) is a British contemporary artist . She was Professor of Fine Art at the Slade School of Fine Art in London .

Live and act

Phyllida Barlow, who lives in London, is the daughter of Erasmus Darwin Barlow. In 1966 she married Fabian Peake, the son of the writer and illustrator Mervyn Peake .

She graduated from the Chelsea School of Art from 1960 to 1963 and moved to London's Slade School of Art from 1963 to 1966.

Barlow has been creating her extensive oeuvre since the 1960s, which mainly consists of large-scale sculptures , but also paintings. Her formal vocabulary consists of everyday objects such as signs, flags, concrete bollards and urban remains, which she covers with layers of paint and material. These open signs make the space more dynamic. Barlow's works of art emerge from dealing with everyday objects. Her works question the role of the sculptural object in contemporary culture. Inspired by the processing of everyday objects, the viewer should see the world with different eyes. Most of the works are destroyed after exposure. This emphasizes the present aspect.

Barlow was part of The London Group, founded in 1913 .

Lecturer

From 1966 to 1967 Barlow taught at the Bristol School of Art. Between 1967 and 1978 she was a professor at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. During her break from teaching at Slade School between 1978 and 1983, she taught in Brighton and Camberwell. She then returned to the Slade School as a professor.

Her students included Rachel Whiteread , Steven Pippin, Douglas Gordon , Spartacus Chetwynd, Bill Woodrow , Angela De la Cruz, and Eva Rothschild.
