The Prairie Dog State Park is a recreation area in Norton County of the US state of Kansas . The 460 hectare state park is located on the north bank of the artificial 480 hectare Keith Sebelius Reservoir . It was named after the Prairie Dog Creek when it opened in 1967 , because at that time there had been no blacktail prairie dogs for a long time . Years of attempts at reintroduction and reintroduction failed until, in 1982, a couple immigrated by themselves, settled in the park and started breeding. The prairie dog buildings are now on an area of around 15 hectares.
White-tailed deer , badgers, prairie wolves as well as turkeys, pheasants and quail can also be found in the park . You can fish for black bass , glass- eyed perch, striped perch , crappie ( pomoxis ), catfish and Canadian pikeperch in the reservoir .
The historic building stock in the park includes the oldest adobe house in Kansas from 1890. It can be viewed as well as the building of a one-class school , which dates from the same period.
The infrastructure consists of a nature trail with display boards, a beach, several picnic areas and camping facilities. The park is accessible from US Highway 36 west of Norton .
