Fujiwara no Umakai
Fujiwara no Umakai ( Japanese 藤原 宇 合 , also: 藤原 馬 養 ; * 694 ; † September 3, 737 ) was a Japanese statesman, general and poet.
The son of Fujiwara no Fuhito was sent to China as vice ambassador in 716. He became governor of Hitachi Province in 719 and inspector of the governors of Awa , Kazusa and Shimousa provinces . In 724 he became Minister of Ceremonies ( 式 部 卿 , shikibu-kyō ) at the imperial court. In 731 he was appointed counselor ( 参議 , sangi ) and in the following year he was appointed governor general of the provinces on Kyūshū ( 西海 道 節度使 , Saikaidō setsudoshi from Chin. Jiedushi ).
Like his brothers Fujiwara no Muchimaro , Fujiwara no Fusasaki and Fujiwara no Maro , Umakai fell victim to a smallpox epidemic in 737. At the time of his death he was advisor, minister of ceremonies, governor general of Dazaifu ( 大 宰 帥 , Dazai no sochi / sotsu ) and held the 3rd real court rank .
With his brothers he is the founder of the four "houses" of the Fujiwara family . His was called Shiki-ke ( 式 家 ).
Some of Umakai's poems are preserved in the Man'yōshū collection , another in the Kaifūsō collection of Chinese poems .
