Valle dei Nuraghi
The Valle dei Nuraghi (Valley of the Nuraghi ) in the province of Sassari in Sardinia is an approximately 37 km² large, rounded basin or a plateau which is about 350 m above sea level, very water-rich and surrounded by hills . The villages Bonorva , Borutta , Cheremule , Giave , Thiesi , Torralba , Cossoine and Rebeccu are located on it because of the earlier risk of malaria in the marshland .
The name "Valley of the Nurages" has recently been invented to increase tourism. The area lies in the Meilogu , whose name comes from Mesu-locu, which means "center of the empire". The local people use the traditional names Campo Giavesu and Campu di Cabbu Abbas (beginning of the waters) for the parts crossed by the Carlo Felice highway , and Campo di Santa Lucia for the part that belongs to the municipality of Bonorva.
The fertile plain, protected by the heights, offered security from the dangers of the sea. The area has ideal conditions for agriculture and livestock farming . It has long been one of the most densely populated areas on the island. The building material included white-green, easy-to-process limestone , trachyte and the basalt of the once numerous Pliocene volcanoes . The closest is the 676 m high Monte Cuccureddu, to which a cable car transports hang-gliders and paragliders . Advantages are the traffic routes between the south and north, which lead over these easy-to-cross plateaus to avoid the mountains. In the area you can find the partly inaccessible Sa Pedra Covacadda and Sa Pedra Longa (two giant tombs ) and the dolmen Su Crastu Covaccadu .
