Mallorca and Barcelona
After the Club World Cup 2000 , which ended in mid-January, Eto'o switched to league rivals RCD Mallorca and joined the team after the Africa Cup 2000 in February. There he developed into his of the best players in the league and scored 54 goals in 133 league games in the seasons 1999/2000 , 2000/01 , 2001/02 , 2002/03 and 2003/04 .
After tough negotiations with arch-rivals Real Madrid, who own 50 percent of the transfer rights, FC Barcelona managed to bring him to the capital of Catalonia for 27 million euros for the 2004/05 season . In 266 games in the Primera División , he scored 155 goals (as of April 2009). In the 2005/06 season Eto'o was the league's top scorer with 26 goals.

At the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea , Cameroon only won one game against Saudi Arabia , in which Eto'o scored one goal (1-0). At the Confederations Cup 2003 he was denied the tournament victory, as Cameroon lost in the final against France .
At the African Cup in 2006 failed Cameroon again in the quarterfinals. Eto'o missed a crucial penalty in a dramatic match against Ivory Coast and Cameroon lost 11-12 on penalties. Eto'o had scored five goals in the preliminary round. Despite only playing four games, he became the tournament's top scorer. In January 2008 he took part in the Africa Cup of 2008 . In the final, the team lost 1-0 to Egypt . Eto'o's five goals in the tournament, scored exclusively in the preliminary round, brought him not only the top scorer's crown, but also the title of record scorer in the Africa Cup . He expanded this record to 18 goals in 29 games in 2010. But also in 2010 Eto'o failed with Cameroon against Egypt, this time with 1: 3 ae in the quarter-finals.
On June 19, 2010 Eto'o scored the 1-0 in the World Cup group game against Denmark , which Cameroon lost 2-1 and was eliminated from the tournament.
In 2011 Cameroon failed to qualify for the Africa Cup for the first time since 1994 , for which Eto'o was also blamed.
In December 2011 Eto'o was suspended by the Disciplinary Committee of the Cameroonian Association for 15 games because he had boycotted the later canceled international match on November 15 in Algeria and urged other players not to play either. At the beginning of January 2012, the ban was reduced to eight months. After the suspension, however, Eto'o decided not to return to the team for the time being, as the deficiencies he had addressed had not been remedied by the association. At the end of September 2012, however, he returned to the national team after a conversation with the new national coach Jean-Paul Akono and Prime Minister Philémon Yang and after a request from President Paul Biya . On October 14th he was used again in the qualifying second leg of the Africa Cup of Nations against Cape Verde . In September 2013 he resigned from the national team again. Exactly a month later, Eto'o announced that he was back for the national soccer team of Cameroon and was immediately nominated for the international match against Tunisia .
At the 2014 World Cup, he was part of the squad , but was only used in the 0-1 in the first game against Mexico. On August 27, 2014 Eto'o announced his resignation from the national team. An emotional moment after leaving the 2014 World Cup was received very positively, when Eto'o hugged a young fan for minutes after arriving at the airport in Cameroon and completely ignored the press present.
