Samuel Eto'o Fils (born March 10, 1981 in Douala ) is a former Cameroonian football player . Eto'o, who is mainly used as a striker , was most recently under contract with Qatar SC . He was voted African Footballer of the Year four times and was one of the best strikers in Europe during his time at FC Barcelona and Inter Milan , with whom he won the Champions League and the triple twice in a row . He made over 700 competitive appearances during his career and scored 359 goals.

Career

In the club

Moved to Spain at the age of 15

In 1996, Eto'o joined Real Madrid from the Kadji Sports Academy at the age of 15 . At Real he played in the 1996/97 season with the second team in the second-rate Segunda División . After the relegation of Real Madrid Castilla in the Segunda División B Eto'o was loaned for the 1997/98 season to the CD Leganés , where he played again in the Segunda División.

For the 1998/99 season Eto'o returned to Real Madrid and came on December 5, 1998 under the head coach Guus Hiddink at the age of 17 to his debut in the Primera División , when he drew 0-0 against Espanyol Barcelona came on during the second half for Davor Šuker . After he had not come to any further use, he moved in January 1999 to the end of the season on loan to Espanyol Barcelona. Under Miguel Brindisi , however, Eto'o came only to one use in the Copa del Rey .

For the 1999/2000 season, which is still only 18 years old Eto'o returned again to Real Madrid. Under the new head coach John Toshack , who had taken over the team during his absence at Espanyol, he was used twice in the league, three times in the Champions League and once at the Club World Cup 2000 .

Mallorca and Barcelona

After the Club World Cup 2000 , which ended in mid-January, Eto'o switched to league rivals RCD Mallorca and joined the team after the Africa Cup 2000 in February. There he developed into his of the best players in the league and scored 54 goals in 133 league games in the seasons 1999/2000 , 2000/01 , 2001/02 , 2002/03 and 2003/04 .

After tough negotiations with arch-rivals Real Madrid, who own 50 percent of the transfer rights, FC Barcelona managed to bring him to the capital of Catalonia for 27 million euros for the 2004/05 season . In 266 games in the Primera División , he scored 155 goals (as of April 2009). In the 2005/06 season Eto'o was the league's top scorer with 26 goals.

Eto'o caused a scandal in 2005 when he played ¡Madrid, cabrón, saluda al campeón! At the championship celebration of FC Barcelona . Inter Milan

After Samuel Eto'o his contract had dissolved in the summer of 2018 at Konyaspor, he moved to Qatar to Qatar SC .

Eto'o made his first appearance for the Cameroonian national team at the age of 14, one day before his 15th birthday, on March 9, 1996 in a friendly against Bulgaria (0: 5). In 1998 he took part with the Central Africans in the World Cup finals in France , where they were eliminated after the preliminary round.

At the end of September 2012, however, he returned to the national team after a conversation with the new national coach Jean-Paul Akono and Prime Minister Philémon Yang and after a request from President Paul Biya . On October 14th he was used again in the qualifying second leg of the Africa Cup of Nations against Cape Verde . In September 2013 he resigned from the national team again. Exactly a month later, Eto'o announced that he was back for the national soccer team of Cameroon and was immediately nominated for the international match against Tunisia .

At the 2014 World Cup, he was part of the squad , but was only used in the 0-1 in the first game against Mexico. On August 27, 2014 Eto'o announced his resignation from the national team. An emotional moment after leaving the 2014 World Cup was received very positively, when Eto'o hugged a young fan for minutes after arriving at the airport in Cameroon and completely ignored the press present.
