Herbert Franke (Sinologist)

Herbert Franke (born September 27, 1914 in Cologne ; † June 10, 2011 ) was a German sinologist .

Life

Franke studied history, philosophy and law at the universities of Cologne , Bonn and Berlin . In 1937 he received his doctorate in law and in 1947 a doctorate in philosophy. From 1949 he was a private lecturer at the University of Cologne . In 1951 and 1952 he was a British Council Fellow at Cambridge University . From 1952 to 1979 he was full professor for East Asian cultural and linguistic studies at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . Franke had been a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences since 1958. With his main field of work "History of China and its marginalized peoples in Central Asia" he was visiting professor at the University of Washington in Seattle in 1964/1965 and 1969/1970 . From 1965 to 1971 he was the first chairman of the German Oriental Society and from 1969 to 1972 Vice President of the German Society for East Asian Studies . From 1974 to 1980 Franke was Vice President of the German Research Foundation and from 1980 to 1985 President of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. From 1993 he was an external member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres and from 1994 a corresponding member of the British Academy .

Franke received several awards, such as the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class, the Bavarian Order of Merit , the Bavarian Maximilian Order for Science and Art and the Bavarian Constitutional Medal . He received the “ Prix ​​Stanislaus Julien of the Académie des incriptions et belles-lettres” in 1953 for his inventory of Sinology after the Second World War .
