The Hanzelijn is a railway line in the Netherlands between the cities of Zwolle and Lelystad , whereby the name, in German Hanse Line , refers to the Hanseatic League , to which the cities of Zwolle and Kampen also belonged. Construction began on January 30, 2007 and was completed in late 2012. Queen Beatrix officially opened the line on December 6, 2012. The line was put into operation when the timetable changed on December 9, 2012.

The Hanzelijn is used by intercity trains from Leeuwarden and Groningen in the direction of Amsterdam Zuid and to Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport station and on to The Hague . The new connection should, for example, shorten the travel time from Groningen to Amsterdam by 20 minutes.

Since a north branch of the Betuweroute is not to be built, the Hanzelijn is also to be used for freight traffic .

The route is designed for a maximum speed of 200 km / h. In the vicinity of Kampen there is a limit of 160 km / h due to cant regulations and at Lelystad of 180 km / h. In practice, however, the ATB limits the maximum permissible speed to 140 km / h.

Buildings and stations

The most important structures on the route are the new Drontermeer tunnel under the Drontermeer , which connects the provinces of Flevoland and Overijssel , and the Hanzeboog over the IJssel near Zwolle, which has replaced an existing bridge there. In the meantime, discussions were held about replacing this with a tunnel under the IJssel, but this was rejected as this would have been too expensive and would have delayed the construction of the line by two years.

Two new stations were built on the route: Dronten and Kampen Zuid . A park-and-ride station in the north of Lelystad , at the junction of the route with the A6 motorway , is still being discussed. Lelystad's main train station has been expanded from two to four tracks.
