Retention volume

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The retention volume is (in terms of water management ) the volume that a natural or artificial, but standing body of water ( lake , reservoir , basin, etc.) additionally or solely has in order to temporarily store a maximum expected inflow and with a discharge rate that is lower than the inflow rate to return. A poor coordination of discharge rates and retention volumes can even have an unfavorable effect on the intended flood protection , especially in the case of a cascade of such facilities .
