The Nederlands Spoorwegmuseum (NSM) is a railway museum in the Netherlands that has been housed in the Maliebaanstation station building in the city of Utrecht since 1954 .

History of the museum

The museum was founded in 1927 and was initially housed in one of the main buildings of the Dutch Railways in Utrecht. The collection consisted mainly of images and documents. In the 1930s, the first efforts to preserve historically valuable railway material developed. But some of this material was lost again as a result of the war.

After the museum was temporarily housed in the Reichsmuseum in Amsterdam , it was able to return to Utrecht in the 1950s. The Maliebaanstation station, closed in 1939, seemed like an excellent location for the museum. After a renovation, the museum opened its doors in 1954. There was now much more space to display the collection to the public and historical material could be displayed. Until 2003, the long line of historic steam locomotives along the first platform was the most eye-catching part of the collection.

Extensions and conversions

Over the years, more and more train and tram sets came to the museum. In the 1950s and 1960s, the entire forecourt was already full of rolling stock, which, however, suffered greatly from the weather.

A first improvement was the construction of a covered platform in 1975, and two years later the site was expanded again. A new pedestrian bridge over the freight train line, which is still in operation, now gave visitors access to the rear exhibition areas. The forecourt was cleared and prepared as a parking lot.

The historical department was housed in the right wing of the station building, the modern department in the left wing . In addition to old paintings and prints, historical bridge models and models of the various types of trains clearly showed the development of the railway in the Netherlands. The last department was set up in the 1980s in order to be able to show the latest developments. Among other things, a driver's cab of the Dutch local railcar Plan Y (De Sprinter) is on display there.

From 1988 to 1989 the station building was rebuilt again. The interior was completely renewed and designed according to the then modern aspects. This facility lasted until 2003. The outdoor area was gradually expanded to include a railway landscape with smaller, historic operating buildings and one of the oldest Dutch railway bridges.

The last additions from the 1990s were a goods warehouse from 1881 from the village of Nijverdal that housed a restaurant, as well as a new building on the outside area with a large model railway. The material collection, which has grown over the years, was largely restored in the 1990s and brought into roadworthy condition.

In 2002 another major renovation was decided. The station building was closed in 2003, cleared and restored to its original 19th century state. It was equipped with the Koninklijke Wachtkamer , the royal waiting room from the old station building in The Hague ( Station Den Haag Staatsspoor ).

The new exhibition

De Grote Ontdekking - (The Big Breakthrough)
De Werkplaats - (The Workshop)

The exhibition area was also largely cleared and refurbished in 2003. A new museum building was created in which the exhibition is now presented in four themed worlds :

  1. de grote ontdekking - (The great breakthrough), the beginnings in the 19th century
  2. droomreizen - (dream travel ), the heyday of international trains around 1900
  3. stalen monsters - (Steel Monsters), the 1930s and 1940s
  4. de werkplaats - (The workshop), a large hall with trains and wagons

In the outdoor area, a historic water tower was set up next to the existing signal house from Hoogezand-Sappemeer.

The presentation of the exhibition and the selection of decorative items are now more oriented towards visits by families with children and groups. The technical content of the exhibition takes a back seat. The fact that this concept works from the museum's point of view can be proven by the steadily increasing number of visitors since 2005.

The Railway Museum now has an important collection of rolling stock. It is already too big to be shown in full on the available area. As a result, a large part of the tram material has been rejected in recent years. Part of the railway collection is in the depot or has been loaned to museum railways.

The collection includes steam locomotives, electric locomotives, diesel locomotives, passenger and freight cars and some trams.
