The class 1200 of the Dutch Railways (NS) is a six-axle electric locomotive series from the years 1951 to 1953. The locomotives were in service with the NS until 1998.

history

Locomotive 1216 in scheduled service in Roermond with Intercity train 939 from Zandvoort (near Amsterdam ) to Heerlen , 1993

After the end of the Second World War there was a great shortage of vehicles at the NS. Since they had no experience of building electric locomotives, locomotives were bought from various suppliers. The locomotives designed by Baldwin were manufactured by Werkspoor in Utrecht . The electrical engineering developed at Westinghouse was supplied by Heemaf in Hengelo . Of the originally 75 locomotives ordered, only 25 were delivered. The American influence can be seen in the high driver's cabs and the large stems that protect the engine driver. 25 locomotives were ordered on November 30, 1950, and the first test run could take place on September 27, 1951. The 1201 was officially put into service on February 9, 1952; the price per locomotive was Hfl 765,000 .

The locomotives had six TM94 engines. The first 14 locomotives were painted turquoise, after which a red-brown color scheme prevailed due to the visible abrasion of the pantographs. From 1954 onwards, all locomotives were given a blue paint scheme, in 1971 the first locomotive was given the new NS house colors gray / yellow, and in 1983 the last locomotive was repainted accordingly. On March 30, 1998, the planned use with the NS ended.

Five more locomotives (1214, 1215, 1218, 1221, 1225) were sold to ACTS Nederland BV in 1999 . In 2010 the company rented three locomotives (1214, 1215, 1225) to the Euro-Express Treincharter (EETC) railway company . They were used by the Netherlands-Austria night trains between Amsterdam and Venlo until April 2015. Five machines (1201, 1202, 1211, 1218, 1221) have been preserved as museum locomotives. NS 1211 is an ambassador locomotive in the Augsburg railway park . The lender is the Utrecht Railway Museum .
