Horn (Dutch-Belgian noble family)

Coat of arms of the House of Horn

The House of Horn was a family of the Dutch - Belgian nobility , whose main line was raised to the rank of count in 1450 and went out in 1540, but was continued as a result of adoption by the House of Montmorency- Horn. The most important historical figure was Philippe de Montmorency, Count von Horn († 1568).

A branch line , the Lords of Baucignies, was raised to Count von Houtekerke in 1505 and became extinct in 1741; a younger branch of the same, the de Hornes family , was elevated to the rank of French Counts of Baucignies in 1509 and to the Spanish-Dutch princely state in 1677, and to the imperial princely state in 1736 ; they died out in 1826 as the last branch of the family.

history

Horn Castle (Limburg)

The family is first attested to as the owner of Horn (Limburg) at the beginning of the 12th century . The family estate was expanded to include Altena (from the end of the 13th century, with a castle of the same name near Almkerk in North Brabant), Wessem , Kortessem, etc. In 1450, the rulership of Horn was elevated to the status of an imperial county of Hoorn .

With the fourth count, the family died out in the main line in 1540, but Count Johann had ensured a smooth transition by adopting his stepson Philippe de Montmorency from the Montmorency family and his siblings. As Count von Horn, Philippe de Montmorency was one of the three leaders in the uprising of the Dutch against Spanish sovereignty and was executed on June 5, 1568 together with Lamoral von Egmond . The county was then confiscated and given to the Bishop of Liège .

A branch line of the family were the lords of Baucignies-en-Thiérache (today Bancigny, Département Aisne ), who inherited the vice-county of Veurne (Furnes) at the beginning of the 15th century and were appointed Counts of Houtekerke in 1505 . The line died out in 1741.

The younger line of the Vice Counts of Veurne were the Counts of Baucignies (French since 1509), who received the Spanish-Dutch title of Prince de Hornes in 1677. The 3rd Prince de Hornes was raised to the rank of imperial prince in 1736 as Prince von Hornes. The Horn family died out completely with his daughters in 1826.
