Friedrich III. Johann Otto Franz Christian Philipp, Prince of Salm-Kyrburg (born May 3, 1745 in Henri-Chapelle , Duchy of Limburg , † July 23, 1794 in Paris ) was the eldest son of Philipp Joseph zu Salm-Kyrburg and Maria Theresa, born of Horn. Moritz zu Salm-Kyrburg (1761–1813) was his brother, Amalie Zephyrine zu Salm-Kyrburg (1760–1841) his sister. Friedrich inherited the property of the von Horn family from his mother, who died in 1783 , including Kasteel Stapelen in Boxtel . He had the Hôtel de Salm built in Paris .

Life

Friedrich was educated at the Collège Louis-le-Grand in Paris. At the age of 17 he entered the imperial military service. In 1770 he became a French colonel. On September 5, 1778 he was promoted to brigadier . In 1779 he became the 3rd Prince of Salm-Kyrburg as heir to his father Philipp Joseph . In the age of the patriots he negotiated with Emperor Joseph II about the repeal of the border protection treaties . As commander of the Rhine Legion, Salm defended the republic. In 1787 he led his army to Utrecht ; When Friedrich Wilhelm II invaded, Salm gave up the city without a fight and fled with his regiment to Weesp .

Shortly after Alexandre de Beauharnais he died by guillotine on July 23, 1794 , towards the end of Maximilien de Robespierre's reign of terror . The proximity to the group of Dantonists was Salm's undoing.
