Philippe de Montmorency

Philippe II. De Montmorency-Nivelle , Count of Hoorn , Baron d'Altena, (* between 1518 and 1526, † June 5, 1568 in Brussels ) was a Dutch admiral and freedom fighter from the Montmorency family . He was a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece .

Count of Hoorn

Philippe was the son of Joseph de Montmorency , Seigneur de Nivelle († 1530) and Anna of Egmond (1504–1574). After his father's death, his mother married Count Johann II von Hoorn , who adopted the children. From then on they bore his name. Philip's brother was Floris van Hoorn (not from Hoorn (North Holland), but from the county of Hoorn near Weert in Limburg), Baron de Montigny, Seigneur de Leuze (1528–1567) who was executed in Spain . Anna von Egmond (1533–1558), his mother's niece of the same name, was the wife of Wilhelm the Schweigers von Orange-Nassau (1533–1584).

Philippe was a member of the Council of State during the reign of Margaret of Parma. In 1546 (engagement in 1540) he married Anna Walburga von Neuenahr (1522–1600). In 1562 he united with Lamoral Count Egmond and William the Silent to oppose the nobility against Cardinal Granvelle (1517–1586), who had brought Spanish troops and the Spanish Inquisition to the Netherlands. Even when Granvelle resigned, the three did not stop fighting against Spanish despotism in the Netherlands.

When the Duke of Alba replaced Margaret of Parma as governor in 1567 , he had Counts Egmond and Hoorn arrested and beheaded as leaders of the resistance . His relatives Count Hermann von Neuenahr , Antoine II. De Lalaing, Comte de Hoogstraten († 1568), and his mother Anna von Egmond had written petitions to Emperor Maximilian II, King Philip II of Spain , Duke Alba, the four Rhenish electors, all electors and the Westphalian Reichskreis unsuccessfully used for him. The execution caused widespread public outrage and marked the beginning of the Eighty Years' War against the Spanish.
