Tyler Steenbergen (born January 7, 1998 in Sylvan Lake , Alberta ) is a Canadian ice hockey player . He has been under contract with the Arizona Coyotes in the National Hockey League (NHL) since March 2018 and also works for their farm team , the Tucson Roadrunners , in the American Hockey League (AHL).

Career

Tyler Steenbergen began his career at Red Deer MHA and later played with the Red Deer Rebels and the Red Deer Chiefs in the Alberta Midget Hockey League . In the Bantam Draft of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 2013, the attacking player was selected in the first round in twelfth position by the Swift Current Broncos , for which he was used from the 2014/15 season . Steenbergen immediately became a regular player and was on the ice in all games of the season, in the playoffs the Swift Current Broncos were eliminated in the first round against the Regina Pats . In the following season Steenbergen completed 67 games and scored 46 points scorer , but the Broncos did not manage to qualify for the playoff games.

In the 2016/17 season , Steenbergen again played all 72 games in the Western Hockey League and scored 90 points at the end of the season. This made Steenbergen, together with Matthew Phillips , the ninth-best scorer and with 51 goals scored, together with Tyler Wong , the top scorer of the season. He was also awarded the Brad Hornung Trophy as the fairest player of the season and was elected to the WHL East Second All-Star Team. In the playoffs, the Swift Current Broncos were eliminated in the conference semifinals again against the Regina Pats. In the 2017/18 season , his last season with the Broncos, Steenbergen's team secured the championship in the Western Hockey League in the form of the Ed Chynoweth Cup with a final victory over the Everett Silvertips .

At the 2017 NHL Entry Draft , Steenbergen was selected in the fifth round as the 128th player by the Arizona Coyotes , with whom he signed a three-year entry contract on March 6, 2018 . Since the 2018/19 season , Steenbergen has been working for the Tucson Roadrunners , the Coyotes' farm team , in the American Hockey League (AHL).

International

In 2018 Tyler Steenbergen was appointed to the squad of the Canadian U20 national ice hockey team, with which he participated in the U20 World Cup. There he scored the decisive 2-1 in the final in the 3-1 final victory of the Canadians over the Swedish selection , so that he won the gold medal with the team.
