Career
Jyri Niemi began his career as a hockey player in the youth department of Tappara Tampere . For the 2006/07 season he left this and joined the A-Juniors from HPK Hämeenlinna . On May 25, 2010, the Islanders exchanged Niemis transfer rights for a six-round vote for the 2010 NHL Entry Draft of the New York Rangers . This was the first transfer between players from the two arch-rivals in almost 38 years. In the 2010/11 season , the Finn played for the farm team of Rangers, Connecticut Whale , 46 games in the American Hockey League , scoring three goals and providing six assists.
In the following two seasons Niemi was still active for the Whale, but was mostly used in the Greenville Road Warriors in the ECHL . After failing to establish himself in North America, he returned to HPK Hämeenlinna in Finland in May 2013.
