The German national ice hockey team is a selection of German players made by the national coach . It represents the German Ice Hockey Federation (DEB) on an international level, for example at the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship or the Olympic Winter Games , but also at other tournaments such as B. the World Cup of Hockey . The team is ranked 7th in the IIHF world rankings after the 2019 World Cup . In 2018, the team won the silver medal at the Winter Olympics and was voted Team of the Year by German sports journalists .

history

The German national team played their first international match during the European ice hockey championship in 1910 , when they lost 1-0 to eventual European champions Great Britain on January 10 . The German Reich itself won the silver medal at this tournament. In the following four years, until the EC 1914 was abolished, the national team always took part in the European Championship and won a medal every year (three times silver, one time bronze), with the tournament in 1912 and thus the European vice-champion title of the German Reich were subsequently canceled by the International Ice Hockey Federation due to the lack of association membership of the participating Austrians . The greatest success of the German national team to date was when they won the bronze medal at the 1932 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid , which were also classified as a world championship, with only four teams taking part in the tournament as a result of the global economic crisis and the resulting lack of financial resources . At the World Championships in 1930 and 1953 , Germany was runner-up, and at the 1934 World Cup , the German Reich took third place. In addition, the national team became European champions at the World Championships in 1930 and 1934, which were each rated as the European Championship.

Although German national teams have participated in the Olympic ice hockey tournaments since 1952 - from 1956 to 1964 as an all-German team - the team was unable to match the successes of the first half of the 20th century. For the first time the team won the bronze medal at the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck . After Germany had actually relegated to Division I at the 2009 World Cup and only managed to stay up as host of the following World Cup, the national team achieved a surprising fourth place at the 2010 World Cup in front of their own audience and thus their best World Cup result in 57 years . At the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea, the team achieved their greatest international success to date by making it to the finals. There they lost 3: 4 in overtime to the Russian team through sudden death .

The German national team has been hosting the Deutschland Cup since 1987 , which it has won seven times (most recently in 2014 and 2015).

By June 2011, Germany's A team had played a total of 1233 games, including 454 wins, 120 draws and 659 defeats. (As of June 6, 2011) .

Trainer

In the early days of German ice hockey there were no real coaches, so the players were led by so-called field captains or other officials. In contrast to football , it was quite common in German ice hockey to hire foreigners as Reich, national or national coaches, most of whom came from Canada until the end of the 1960s .

mascot

Urmel on the ice has been the official mascot of the German national team since November 2006 . He wears the shirt number (20) 10 (year of the ice hockey world championship in Germany) and, according to his fan page, played as a striker at the "EHC Titiwu" and the EHC " Augsburger Puppenkiste ".
