Alexander "Alex" Petrovic (born March 3, 1992 in Edmonton , Alberta ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Boston Bruins of the National Hockey League since September 2018 and for their farm team , the Providence Bruins , in the American Hockey League plays on the position of defender . Prior to that, he spent over six years in the Florida Panthers organization .
Career
youth
Alex Petrovic was born in Edmonton and played there in his youth for the Maple Leaf Athletic Club before he was selected in the 2007 Bantam Draft of the Western Hockey League (WHL) in 33rd position by the Red Deer Rebels . At the end of the 2007/08 season he made his debut in the WHL and came up with ten missions before he was firmly in the Rebels squad with the beginning of the following season. He also represented the Canada Pacific team at the 2009 World U-17 Hockey Challenge at the turn of the year 2008/09 and won the silver medal with the team. In the 2009/10 season, the defender increased his personal statistics significantly to 27 scorer points from 57 games, took part in the CHL Top Prospects Game and was consequently selected in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in 36th position by the Florida Panthers . However, Petrovic initially spent two more seasons in the WHL, in which he was elected to the Second (2011) and First All-Star Team (2012) of the Eastern Conference and in 2012 the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy as the best defender of the WHL received.
Florida panthers
Petrovic had already signed an entry-level contract with the Panthers in April 2011 and switched to their organization for the first time at the end of the 2011/12 season when he played his first 14 professional games in the American Hockey League for the San Antonio Rampage , the Panthers' farm team . In San Antonio, the Canadian also spent most of the following season 2012/13 , scored 17 points in 55 games and was called up for the first time in the NHL squad of the Panthers in April 2013, where he subsequently played six games. The same picture emerged in the 2013/14 season, in which he came to seven NHL and 43 AHL appearances.
Petrovic received significantly more NHL playing time for the first time in the 2014/15 season , when he completed 33 games for the Panthers and at the same time led the San Antonio Rampage as assistant captain. In the summer of 2015, he extended his contract in Florida for another two years and finally established himself in the NHL squad with the start of the 2015/16 season , so that he was no longer sent back to the AHL.
Edmonton and Boston
After over six years and over 250 missions for the Panthers, Petrovic was transferred to the Edmonton Oilers in December 2018 . With that, the defender returned to his hometown. In return, Florida received Chris Wideman and a third-round vote for the 2019 NHL Entry Draft . The Oilers had from a previous swap in addition to their own third-round voting rights of the New York Islanders , with Florida receiving the higher of the two. With the Oilers at the end of the 2018/19 season, Petrovic did not receive a further contract, so he joined the Boston Bruins as a free agent in September 2019 .
