Tyler Bunz (born February 11, 1992 in Regina , Saskatchewan ) is a former Canadian ice hockey goalkeeper who played a game for the Edmonton Oilers in the National Hockey League between 2008 and 2015 , but mainly in American hockey League and ECHL played.

Career

Bunz spent a successful junior period with the Medicine Hat Tigers in the Western Hockey League between 2008 and 2012 . Within the four years, the goalkeeper was voted into the All-Star Team twice and at the end of the 2011/12 season was also awarded the Del Wilson Trophy as the best goalkeeper in the league.

After he was selected in the NHL Entry Draft 2010 in the fifth round in 121st place by the Edmonton Oilers from the National Hockey League , they took him under contract in March 2012. At the beginning of the 2012/13 season they used him with the Stockton Thunder in the ECHL . There he played 37 games. He also played a game for the Oklahoma City Barons in the American Hockey League . The 2013/14 season was ultimately a step backwards, as he did not get beyond the reserve role behind Laurent Brossoit even in the ECHL at the Bakersfield Condors . He completed only 18 season games, five of them for the Barons in the AHL.

To make matters worse, he suffered a life-threatening injury on March 22, 2014 after a puck hit him with full force in the neck area. Bunz suffered a fracture of the larynx and his vocal cords were also affected. Nevertheless, an operation could be dispensed with and Bunz left the hospital just two days after the incident. After a long rehabilitation process, the goalkeeper was able to start the 2014/15 season with the Wichita Thunder and was again active for Oklahoma City during the season. On April 2, 2015, he finally celebrated his NHL debut for the Edmonton Oilers when he replaced Ben Scrivens for twelve minutes in the final third of the game against the Los Angeles Kings .

After the season, Bunz ended his active career at the age of 23.
