John McFarland (born April 2, 1992 in Richmond Hill , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player . The center played three games for the Florida Panthers in the National Hockey League in the 2015/16 season and was otherwise used in minor leagues .

Career

McFarland was first selected by the Sudbury Wolves in the 2008 OHL Priority Selection and as a result was honored with the Jack Ferguson Award . In August 2008 he signed a contract with the Wolves, for which he went on the ice in the Ontario Hockey League . After his second season in the OHL, in which he scored 50 points in 64 games, he was selected in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft in 33rd place by the Florida Panthers . After another twelve games for Sudbury, McFarland moved to league rivals Saginaw Spirit in December 2010 . For this, the attacker was on the ice until January 2012, before he was transferred to the Ottawa 67’s within the Ontario Hockey League .

He spent the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons alternately in the American Hockey League with the San Antonio Rampage and in the ECHL with the Cincinnati Cyclones . At the beginning of the 2015/16 season, he moved to the Panthers' new farm team, the Portland Pirates , and also made his debut with the Panthers in the NHL in February 2016.

After the 2015/16 season, McFarland moved to Europe for the first time and joined SaiPa from the Finnish Liiga . He then moved to HC La Chaux-de-Fonds in the Swiss League before returning to North America after two years. There he briefly ran for the Bakersfield Condors in the AHL and the Wichita Thunder in the ECHL before he declared his career over in February 2019.

International

At the World U-17 Hockey Challenge 2009 McFarland won the gold medal with Team Canada Ontario , was the best scorer of the tournament with 13 points and was then elected to the All-Star team. In the same year he won the gold medal at the Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament , in which he led the Canadian team as captain on the ice. For Canada , he also took part in the U18 World Junior Championships in 2009 and 2010 .
