Julian Melchiori (born December 6, 1991 in Richmond Hill , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with Neftechimik Nizhnekamsk from the Continental Hockey League (KHL) since July 2020 and plays there in the position of defender . His uncle Mike Murphy was also a professional ice hockey player and later a coach in the NHL.
Career
Melchiori played between 2007 and 2010 in various lower-class junior leagues on Ontario. After he was selected in the third round of the NHL Entry Draft 2010 in 87th place by the Atlanta Thrashers from the National Hockey League (NHL), he first joined the Kitchener Rangers from the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). He played there for a year and a half before he was transferred to league rivals Oshawa Generals in January 2012 for the final months of his junior career .
After the 2011/12 season ended, the defender signed a contract with the Winnipeg Jets , the successor to the Thrashers franchise , and joined their farm team , the St. John's IceCaps between 2012 and 2015 and the Manitoba Moose in American Hockey in 2015 and 2018 League (AHL) used. During the 2013-14 season , he made his NHL debut for the Jets when he was used in a game. Two seasons later, eleven more games followed in the top North American division.
After more than six years in the organization of the Jets, Melchiori did not receive a further contract after the 2017/18 season, so he joined the Florida Panthers as a free agent in July 2018 . There he spent the entire season with the Springfield Thunderbirds before signing an AHL-limited contract with the Binghamton Devils in July 2019 . After the Canadian had spent a year there, he moved in July of the following year to the Russian club Neftechimik Nizhnekamsk from the Continental Hockey League (KHL).
