history
At the end of the 18th century, North Sydney was a thriving port city. By 1870, the city's port was the fourth largest in Canada. Steam ships loaded coal here and the Western Union had established an intercontinental telegraph line in 1875 . In 1891 there were 2,513 people in North Sydney.
Ferry traffic with Newfoundland began in 1898 after the Reid-Newfoundland Company selected North Sydney as the mainland port. The trip of the SS Bruce to Port aux Basques in June of this year was the first trip by a ferry connection that still exists today.
