Drew Richard Fata (born July 28, 1983 in Sault Ste. Marie , Ontario ) is an Italian - Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Sheffield Steelers in the British Elite Ice Hockey League since August 2012 . His older brother Rico is also a hockey player.
Career
Drew Fata began his career as a hockey player in Canada's top junior league Ontario Hockey League , where he was active from 2000 to 2003 for the Toronto St. Michael's Majors and the Kingston Frontenacs . During this period he was selected in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft in the third round as a total of 86th player by the Pittsburgh Penguins , for which he never played.
Instead, the defender ran from 2003 to 2006 for their farm teams , the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins from the American Hockey League and the Wheeling Nailers from the ECHL . On December 21, 2006, the left shooter received a contract with the New York Islanders as a free agent . For this he made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 2006/07 season , scoring one goal in four games. In the following season, the Canadian gave an assist for the Islanders in five NHL games. During his time in the Islanders' franchise , however, he mainly played for their AHL farm team, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers . In the 2008/09 season Fata was on the ice for the AHL clubs San Antonio Rampage and Binghamton Senators . He then received a one-year contract as a free agent with the Boston Bruins on July 7, 2009 , but was only used with the Providence Bruins. He also suffered an elbow injury, so that he only came to 27 appearances in the AHL.
After the 2009/10 season, Fata received no new contract and was initially unemployed. It wasn't until October 2010 that he received a trial contract with the Wilkes-Barre / Scranton Penguins, but was only used in one game and was released again at the end of October. On November 1, 2010 he received a contract with the Norwegian first division club Sparta Warriors , with whom he won the Norwegian championship at the end of the 2010/11 season . In the summer of 2011, the Italian-Canadian moved to his second home, Italy, where he signed with the reigning champions Asiago Hockey .
In the summer of 2012, the Italo-Canadian was signed for two seasons by the Sheffield Steelers from the British Elite Ice Hockey League .
