Rico Fata (born February 12, 1980 in Sault Ste. Marie , Ontario ) is a former Italo - Canadian ice hockey player who was active for the Calgary Flames , New York Rangers and Pittsburgh Penguins in the National Hockey League . His brother Drew is also a professional ice hockey player.
Career
Fata was selected by the Calgary Flames as the sixth player in the first round of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft , but despite this high draft position, he did not succeed in asserting himself until his move to the New York Rangers in 2001 in Calgary, so that he was mostly used in lower-class farm teams . A breakthrough was also denied in New York , so that after one and a half seasons he moved from the Rangers to the Pittsburgh Penguins . Fata joined the Washington Capitals in 2005 via the Atlanta Thrashers .
During the NHL lockout in the 2004/05 season , the Italian-Canadian played hockey for the Italian Serie A1 club Asiago Hockey . He left the Capitals during the 2006/07 season for Germany and joined the Adler Mannheim , with whom he won the German championship . Fata, considered one of the fastest players in the league is true, had a contract in Mannheim until 2009. In September 2008, his contract was terminated with immediate effect and he joined the EHC Biel in the Swiss National League A . After he no longer received a contract for the 2011/12 season, he moved to league rivals Genève-Servette HC , where he signed a one-year contract. For the 2013/14 season, Fata was signed by the Finnish first division club Helsingfors IFK from the Finnish Liiga , but released after a few weeks. Then he ended his career.
International
Fata represented Canada at the 1999 U20 World Junior Championship . During the tournament he scored one goal and three assists. In the final he lost to Russia with the maple leaves and won the silver medal.
