North Equatorial Current

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The north equatorial current is a warm ocean current in a westerly direction, driven by the trade winds , and occurs in the Pacific , Atlantic and Indian Oceans . It is part of a circular flow, the northern parts of which are in the westerly wind zone .

In the Pacific, the North Equatorial Current is part of the North Pacific Vortex and flows between 10 ° and 20 ° north latitude.

In the Atlantic, it flows between 10 ° and 30 ° north latitude and, together with the Antilles Current, the Florida Current, the Gulf Stream , the Northeast Atlantic Current, the Portugal Current and the Canary Current, forms the great Atlantic current ring.

In the Indian Ocean, the direction of the north equatorial current depends on the season. In the winter months during the northeast monsoon , it is a weak ocean current in a westerly direction along the equator . In the summer months during the southwest monsoon, on the other hand, the strong Somali current forms , which first flows in a north-easterly direction along the African coast and then to the east as a monsoon current past India .
