Max Volkhart (born October 17, 1848 in Düsseldorf ; † March 29, 1924 there ) was a German genre painter and etcher from the Düsseldorf School of Painting .

life and work

Max Volkhart was the son of the painter Wilhelm Volkhart . Like his father, he received an artistic training at the Royal Prussian Art Academy in Düsseldorf . He studied mainly with Heinrich Lauenstein , Andreas Müller and Julius Roeting , later privately with Eduard von Gebhardt . His first well-known pictures were created under his leadership, including a dressing room in Gravelotte . Later he went repeatedly to Belgium and the Netherlands for long periods of time , where he painted partly pictures and partly studies from nature. In Rotterdam he carried out a large panorama in 1881 that depicts the victory of the Prince of Orange over the Spaniards in the land and sea battle at Nieuwpoort .

In March 1883 Volkhart joined the Düsseldorf rowing club, which was founded in 1880 . Since 1883 this association had a permanent boathouse in the security harbor at the art academy . In contrast to painters listed there, such as Sophus Jacobsen , Fritz Neuhaus and Hermann Pohle , Volkhart, like Ernst Roeber and Frederick Vezin, was a moderate participant in rowing events .

Like his father, Volkhart was also a member of the Malkasten artists' association . There he took part in the "Garden Festival for the Cornelius Celebration" on June 24, 1879, the Mask Festival in February 1888 "A Winter Night's Dream" and in the anniversary festival in July 1898 "A Double Wedding Celebration", where he directed.

His numerous paintings and etchings often show simple scenes from the 18th to 20th centuries, taking into account the character of the time in which the content of the picture is displayed. His work is characterized by accurate brushstrokes and careful treatment of the material based on the old Dutch.

Works to be highlighted are Audienz, Ein Rauchkollegium, Much Ado About Nothing, The New Book, The Parliamentary, A Duet and The Rejected Suitor .

family

Max Volkhart was married to Anna, a daughter of his teacher Julius Roeting, since 1878. They had three children, two girls and a boy.

The younger daughter Claire (1886–1935) learned to paint and worked as a sculptor and wax boss for porcelain . Around 1912 she worked as a freelancer for Rosenthal , and from 1913 to 1929 she made designs for the Schwarzburger Werkstätten . In 1918 she married the actor Anton Theodor Selmair, known since 1927 under the stage name Tonio Selwart .

The youngest, the son Kurt , was more technically oriented and became an engineer and automobile designer , racing driver and later the first rocket driver in history and thus one of the pioneers of space travel .
