Order of the Knights of San Marco

The Knightly Order of San Marco , or Order of Saint Mark , was a Venetian order .

Order decoration

The sign of the order consisted of a gold chain with a medallion on it, which on one side showed the lion of St. Mark , the heraldic animal of Venice , and on the other side the name of the ruling Doge. There was also a depiction of the doge on his knees receiving a flag from the hand of St. Mark. In the right paw the lion holds a sword, in the left an open book with the inscription: Pax Tibi Marce Evangelista meus . There were annual pensions.
