Wieland Backes (born September 10, 1946 in Feldbach , Austria ) is a German television journalist and presenter . He is the founder and host of the SWR talk show Nachtcafé . He hosted the guessing show I Have a Big Name . As one of the directors of the "Institute for Moderation" (imo) at the Stuttgart Media University , he leads the training of young moderators on a voluntary basis.

Education and private matters

Wieland Backes ' parents were Romanian Germans who had fled from the Banat , his parents were both headmasters. Wieland Backes was born in Feldbach, Austria, in 1946 as the sixth and youngest child. He grew up in the Stuttgart area , made his first small feature film at the age of 16 and a little later was on stage as a presenter at school events. From 1968 he studied chemistry and geography at the University of Stuttgart . A research stay in the Republic of Ireland followed the state examination. 1978 Backes with a dissertation on planning and development in the central Neckar region to Dr. rer. nat. PhD.

Backes is married to a lawyer and has three children.

Career

Backes began his career in 1973 as an intern and then as a freelancer for the television of the Süddeutscher Rundfunk (SDR) . He has been present on the screen as a moderator since 1975. He worked as a reporter, editor and presenter for the evening show in Baden-Württemberg and headed this magazine from 1982 to 1987. In 1987 Backes founded the new entertainment information department at SDR , which later became the SWR's journalistic entertainment department .

A few years earlier he was involved in the development of journalistic studio programs with an entertainment character. In 1978, based on his concept, the Werkstatt series was created in Südwest 3 , and in 1981 the first thematic talk show on careers (ARD / SDR) went on air, which Backes was in charge of as co-moderator and editor. In 1982 he founded the cabaret artist Mathias Richling, his first current television satire.

In 1987 Backes started his talk show Nachtcafé in Schloss Favorite in Ludwigsburg , with which he became the "uncrowned king of level talk" according to the critics ( Die Zeit of May 31, 2000) . The show, which has been on the program every week since 2001, developed into the flagship of SWR television and also made Backes known nationwide. The show is still one of the most successful formats on SWR television.

In addition to the night café , Backes hosted the personality show Auf der Couch with star guests such as Senta Berger , Mario Adorf , Wolfgang Joop , Marcel Reich-Ranicki , Manfred Krug and Udo Jürgens from 1988 to 1992 . The show was also shown in the main evening program of ARD in 1982.

In addition to his work as an SDR moderator, Backes also made various documentaries. In 1975 he made the environmental and living conditions in the Stuttgart metropolitan area the subject of a film sell-out in a region , and in 1981 he made a film about the squatters in Berlin with Im Turm (for the ARD series Unter German Roofs by Radio Bremen ). His film Alpha 60 - On the Difficulty of Being an APO Child reports about the youth club Club Alpha 60 in Schwäbisch Hall . At the beginning of 1999, Backes also took over the moderation of the now weekly show Ich carry a great name , a guessing program about the descendants of famous ancestors, which is one of the most successful programs on SWR television, and in 2001 the themed evenings Sleepless in the South West on South West TV.

In October 2010 he became an honorary professor at the Stuttgart Media University .

In February 2012 the night café celebrated its 25th anniversary. With his show, Wieland Backes is the German talk show host with the longest screen presence. After more than 27 years and 706 programs, Wieland Backes presented his last issue of the night café entitled “Happy End” on December 12, 2014.

In December 2019, Wieland Backes performed 465 programs for the last time, I carry a big name . In the parting sequence he could be guessed by himself, the descendant was his daughter Eva. Julia Westlake will succeed in moderation .
