There the American was able to convince in his first season and was also one of the players with the highest points in his team, as he was able to score 49 points in 40 games . In the following three years, the left-shooter was able to improve continuously and scored a total of 232 points in 167 games. Swanson received seven awards for his accomplishments. In the 1994 NHL Entry Draft , the center was selected by the San Jose Sharks in the fifth round as 115th. They had transferred him to the New York Rangers in 1996 together with Jayson More and a draft pick for Marty McSorley .

The last four games of the 1998/99 season Swanson played for the Hartford Wolf Pack from the American Hockey League , the farm team of the Rangers. In the summer of 1999 Swanson signed a contract with the Edmonton Oilers , but was mainly used in their farm team, the Hamilton Bulldogs , where he was one of the best scorers. It was only in his fourth and final season in Edmonton that Swanson achieved the breakthrough when he played 44 NHL games and scored 12 points scorer.

This was followed by a move to the Atlanta Thrashers , where the American was also almost exclusively on the ice for the Chicago Wolves farm team and was able to score 47 points in 70 games. Then Brian Swanson joined the Kassel Huskies from the DEL in the 2004/05 season , with whom he was relegated in sport. He then signed with the Nürnberg Ice Tigers for the next season . In his second year Swanson was German runner-up. In the 2007/08 season he increased his points yield on the side of Petr Fical and Andre Savage again, but was eliminated early in the play-offs . The American completed the next year completely despite an injury, but was not able to perform as usual due to this handicap. During the summer break he was unable to agree on a new contract in Nuremberg . Then Swanson moved to league competitor Iserlohn Roosters . There he initially acted as a center between the longtime duo Jimmy Roy and Ryan Ready . On the 18th matchday he already achieved his previous year's performance with his ninth goal of the season. After changes in the team, he formed a series with Jeff Giuliano and Daniel Sparre from November 2009 . After the season, the Roosters announced their interest in a contract extension. Swanson returned to his native Alaska in July 2010 and signed a contract with the Alaska Aces in the ECHL . There he became a regular player and became one of the team's best scorers. His high sporting standard and his fairness led to Swanson being honored with the ECHL Sportsmanship Award .
