David Tanabe (born July 19, 1980 in White Bear Lake , Minnesota ) is a retired American ice hockey player . During his career, he played for the Carolina Hurricanes , Phoenix Coyotes and Boston Bruins in the National Hockey League .

Career

Tanabe was among the first American high school students to train and play together in the National Team Development Program in Ann Arbor , Michigan . After graduating from high school in Ann Arbor, Tanabe played for the University of Wisconsin – Madison . Tanabe was selected as the 16th player overall by the Carolina Hurricanes during the 1999 NHL Entry Draft . During his first NHL game, he scored his first professional goal against the Calgary Flames . The defender quickly became a fixture in the NHL. In the 2003/04 season he played for the Phoenix Coyotes . He then went to the Swiss first division club Kloten Flyers and Rapperswil-Jona Lakers in the 2004/05 season during the failed NHL season .

On August 5, 2006 it wanted the Boston Bruins because of its content of 1,275,000 US Dollars , not oblige, the two days were previously granted to him by a court of arbitration. This immediately made Tanabe a free agent under NHL law . On August 29, 2006 Tanabe was signed by his longtime ex-club Carolina Hurricanes .

In December 2007, David Tanabe suffered a severe concussion in a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs . On October 18, 2008, Hurricanes manager Jim Rutherford announced that Tanabe would be paid $ 850,000 over the next three years after doctors recommended him to retire.
