Jeffrey "Jeff" O'Neill (born February 23, 1976 in Richmond Hill , Ontario ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current sports commentator , who in the course of his active career between 1992 and 2007, among other things, 855 games for the Hartford Whalers and Carolina Hurricanes and Toronto Maple Leafs played on the right winger position in the National Hockey League . With the Carolina Hurricanes, O'Neill, who had been selected in fifth overall position in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft , reached the finals of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2002 .

Career

The 1.85 m tall winger began his career with the Guelph Storm in the Canadian Junior League Ontario Hockey League before he was selected ( drafted ) in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft as fifth in the first round by the Hartford Whalers .

Even after the franchise moved to Carolina , he was still on the ice for the team that has since played in the National Hockey League under the name Carolina Hurricanes . With the Hurricanes, the right-handed shooter reached the finals of the Stanley Cup playoffs in 2002 , which was lost to the Detroit Red Wings . To this day, O'Neill is in first or second place in all of the team's scores, and in 2003 he was also elected to the Eastern Conference team for the 53rd NHL All-Star Game .

On July 30, 2005, the then 30-year-old Canadian was transferred to the Toronto Maple Leafs by the Hurricanes in exchange for a draft pick in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft , after he had expressed his desire to play for the Maple Leafs. So he was able to be closer to his family after the unexpected accidental death of his brother Donny. After spending the 2006/07 season with the Maple Leafs and one of the team's top scorers, he suspended the entire 2007/08 season . In late summer 2008 he took part in the Carolina Hurricanes training camp, but agreed shortly before the start of the season that the team would release him from his trial contract.
