For the Tampa Bay Lightning , of which he had already been selected as a high school player in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft in the second round as a 41st player, the defender made his debut in the National Hockey League in the 2007/08 season , where he remained pointless in 14 games and received twelve penalty minutes. In the preseason, the left shooter had only played for their farm team at the time , the Springfield Falcons from the American Hockey League . From 2007 Smaby ran parallel for Tampa Bay in the NHL and their new farm team, the Norfolk Admirals , in the AHL. On July 14, 2011, he signed a one-year contract with the Anaheim Ducks , for which he did not play a single game.
