Steven "Steve" Pinizzotto (born April 26, 1984 in Mississauga , Ontario ) is a German - Canadian ice hockey player who was active in the German Ice Hockey League for the EHC Red Bull Munich and the Kölner Haie . He plays in the position of the right winger and is considered a tough player with many penalty minutes, who was mostly used as an agitator in the fourth row in the NHL or AHL and whose tasks were primarily the defensive game and provoking the opponent.

Pinizzotto is the son of an Italian and a German and he has both Canadian and German citizenship. His two brothers Jason and Marc are also professional ice hockey players.

Career

Canadian Junior and US College Leagues

Pinizzotto began his career just like his brothers before with the Oakville Blades in the second-rate Canadian junior league OPJHL , where he was active for five seasons from the 2000/01 season. In the 2004/05 season he was the most successful player on his team with 95 points and the third best scorer in the entire league. He then moved to the university team of the Rochester Institute of Technology in Atlantic Hockey in 2005 , which is integrated into the game operations of the US college league NCAA . Here, too, he was again the most successful scorer of his team in his second season in 2006/07.

2 × Calder Cup winners and NHL players in Vancouver and Edmonton

In March 2007, Pinizzotto signed a contract with the Washington Capitals organization , becoming the first Rochester Institute of Technology player to sign a professional contract with an NHL team. In his four years in the organization of the caps , the winger was in the ECHL with the South Carolina Stingrays and with the Hershey Bears from the AHL used. In the 2008/09 season he played more often with the Bears and was able to win the AHL championship, the Calder Cup , with them. Pinizzotto was used in the play-offs in the 4th row of attacks, in which he ensured, in particular with his body game, that Jason Krog , the most successful striker of the final opponent Manitoba Moose , could not play his dangerousness in the final series. In the following season 2009/10 he was only active for the team from the Chocolate City and was able to contribute 49 points to winning the AHL championship again.

For the 2011/12 season he signed the Vancouver Canucks, where he was scheduled to replace the migrating Raffi Torres . During the final game of preparation against the San Jose Sharks , Pinizzotto injured his shoulder after a check from Douglas Murray and was then unable to play a single game of the season. The Canadian started his comeback with the farm team , the Chicago Wolves , as the NHL was not played because of the lockout . After its end, he made his debut in March 2013 in the game against the Nashville Predators in the NHL and was later used in the play-offs.

For the 2013/14 season , Pinizzotto moved to the NHL organization of the Florida Panthers , but was transferred to league rivals Edmonton Oilers during the current season . Since then, the German-Canadian has played alternately either for the Oilers in the NHL or for the Oklahoma City Barons farm team in the AHL. In November 2014, he managed the rare ice hockey feat of a Gordie Howe hat-trick in a game against his former team from Vancouver . All in all, he was assisted in his time in North America offensive assertiveness, danger at goal combined with good passing play.

Change to the DEL - 3 × champions with Munich

In May 2015, the EHC Red Bull Munich from the German Ice Hockey League announced the commitment of the right-handed shooter for the 2015/16 season , where he was number 14. In Munich he met Keith Aucoin again , with whom he was already able to celebrate successes at the Hershey Bears, was the penalty box king of the league in his first DEL season, but also the Munich team's best scorer in the play-offs, which were their first German championship celebrated. In the following season of 2016/17, in which he and his team became champion again, the German-Canadian, who had meanwhile become a public favorite, was particularly noticeable in the final series against the Grizzlys Wolfsburg with his physical effort against Sebastian Furchner . In his third season with the team from the Bavarian capital, he was able to win the championship again. Although he scored the most points (38) and the fewest penalty minutes (120) this season, a check from him in the playoff semifinals against Matthias Plachta from Adler Mannheim remained in the public eye. In the games in the subsequent final series against the Eisbären Berlin , his style of play was seen as an important part of the eventual victory and repeated title win. Overall, he was involved with 39 goals in 141 DEL games in the three German championships of the EHC Red Bull Munich.

In June 2018 he left Munich and was signed by the Kölner Haien to replace the injured Marcel Müller for the 2018/19 season . In November 2018, Pinizzotto had to undergo knee surgery and could not play any more ice hockey games during the season.
